Brenda Mtambo: 30 Years Of Freedom

For our celebration of South Africa’s 30 Years of Freedom, Afro-soul singer-songwriter honours the artists who became the blueprint for future generations, including work from Savuka, Johnny Clegg, Paul Simon, Sibongile Khumalo, Lucky Dube, Swazi Dlamini, Ringo Madlingozi, Siphokazi, Zahara, Thandiswa and more. “I find these songs to be so special because of the message they carry,” Mtambo tells Apple Music. “These songs became our anthems over these three decades , and they continue to inspire this new generation. ‘Stimela Sase Zola’ will be one of those songs [through which] we will forever feel the buzz of excitement in South Africa.  “I remember growing up and listening to Mam’ Sibongile and getting inspired,” she continues. “Mam’ Letta Mbulu even today inspires me, and a lot of South African artists—they were part of the struggle, and yet their songs speaks to us as South Africans even today. Some evoke power within us, some [show us] how far we've come, and how far we still have to go.”   Thirty years later, Mtambo hopes that new generations keep fighting for a better world. “I want to see a South Africa that is peaceful, driven by culture and traditions that define who we are,” she says. “Democracy evolves as well; we have new obstacles that are still hindering our country that we need to fight hard for. And what makes South Africa special is diversity and inclusivity. The fact that amapiano is now shaking the word tells you the impact South Africa has in the world, and our diversity makes us all spicy and interesting.”
